Indestructible
Jack H. Lucas with D.K. Drum
William Morrow
Jack Lucas is the youngest Marine and the youngest World War II Veteran to receive the Medal Of Honor. His heroism at the Battle Of Iwo Jima saved the lives of three Marines.
On the second day of battle, Lucas and three other Marines attempted to dislodge the ferocious Japanese from a pillbox. As they assaulted the fortified position, two enemy grenades landed near the Marines. Realizing the danger he and his brothers were in, Lucas quickly leapt on one and pulled the second underneath him. Lucas expected to die from the blasts, but somehow he survived.
Indestructible details Lucas' recovery, his life after the receiving the Medal of Honor, and the life after the war. Lucas describes his feelings towards the Japanese and why he felt the urge to fight them. We then follow the life of a celebrity seventeen-year-old Medal Of Honor winner, which includes some harrowing experiences. Some of these experiences revealed he had one hell of a guardian angel.
When it comes to memoirs, Lucas’ is one of the best. He writes like we are swapping war stories at a detachment gathering. He is not afraid to throw flashbacks in the middle of his tales. These flashbacks paint a bigger picture and reveal a man who lived life to the fullest. If you have need a book for a lazy afternoon, then Indestructible is that book.
